The Park Seed Company came into being in 1868 when an ambitious, garden-loving teenager decided that he needed some extra pocket money. Sixteen-year-old George Watt Park, in Libonia, Pennsylvania, decided to harvest and sell seeds from his own garden. Thanks to hard work and good advertising, George was able to turn his $3.50 investment into a total return of $6.50--and a company was born. George W. Park spent the rest of his life building the company that still proudly bears his name. A company this old is bound to have stories, documents, and artifacts that are of historical value, and Park Seed Company certainly does. Beyond the obvious decades of beautiful and informative catalogs, the drawers full of corporate paperwork, and the odd closets containing souvenirs and artifacts, Park Seed boasts unique items, such as our photo repository containing thousands of images, and our amazing Seeds in Space memorabelia, celebrating our long partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Thanks to support and guidance from the Clemson University Library Special Collections unit, and special encouragement from Clemson's Creative Inquiry program of undergraduate research, Park Seed has undertaken the task of making some of our rich heritage available electronically for researchers of all types. This website is a very informal prototype for a planned online archive. Whether you are a serious academician or a curious browser, you are cordially invited to explore the information provided here. Please do adhere to the usage restrictions provided in the Park Seed Corporate Archive Access Policy. And if you have questions or want to arrange for more formal access to Park Seed Company's materials, contact the Special Projects Director (see Contact Us). Thank you for visiting--we hope you find something useful and enjoyable here, and that you'll let other interested parties know that this site exists. |
